Pomorie: Salt, Sea and a Different Side of the Bulgarian Coast
Pomorie is one of the best day trips for visitors who want something more substantial than another resort.
The town occupies a narrow peninsula farther south along the coast and has a long history under its ancient name Anchialos. Its identity is closely tied to the sea, salt production, Pomorie Lake and the area's traditional use of therapeutic mud.
Pomorie feels more like an actual Bulgarian coastal town than a purpose-built holiday resort. That alone makes it worth seeing.
Why visit Pomorie?
Come for a combination of coastal walks, local history, Pomorie Lake, salt-making heritage, beaches, wine and a more year-round town atmosphere.
It deserves more than a quick photograph and departure.
Pomorie Salt Museum
One of Pomorie's distinctive attractions is its Salt Museum, located by Pomorie Lake.
Salt production is deeply connected with the town and surrounding lagoon landscape, so this is one of those museums that helps explain why the place around you looks and developed the way it did.
Opening hours can change through the year, so check the current schedule before travelling.
Pomorie Lake
The lake sits immediately beside the town and forms part of the wider wetland landscape.
It is visually very different from Sunny Beach's hotel-and-sand environment and provides one of the strongest reasons to visit Pomorie rather than simply another resort settlement.
Treat sensitive wetland areas respectfully and use designated paths and observation areas.
Historic sights
Pomorie also has worthwhile historical sites, including the Antique Dome Tomb outside the central peninsula.
Opening arrangements can vary seasonally, so check before making a special journey to an individual site.
Beaches
Pomorie has several beach areas around the town and peninsula.
The environment is different from Sunny Beach: rather than one giant resort strip, beaches sit within and around a working coastal town.
Wine and food
Pomorie has long associations with viticulture and wine as well as fishing and coastal cuisine.
This makes it a particularly good destination for a slower lunch rather than a rushed sightseeing circuit.
Getting from Sunny Beach to Pomorie
Pomorie is farther away than Nessebar, Ravda or Sveti Vlas, so treat it as a proper excursion rather than popping out for an hour.
Car, taxi/private transfer and public transport are all possible depending on season and schedule. If using public transport, verify the return connection before leaving, particularly outside July and August.
How much time?
Give Pomorie at least half a day.
A full relaxed day is better if you want the museum, lake area, historical sights, beach and a meal.
Our local take
Pomorie is a good antidote to the idea that Bulgaria's coast consists only of hotel resorts.
It has beach tourism, certainly—but also salt, wetlands, history and a town that continues existing when the summer season ends.
